Filing a home insurance claim can feel overwhelming—especially during an already stressful situation. While no homeowner wants to deal with property damage, understanding how the claims process works can save you time, money, and frustration.

In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how to file a home insurance claim and what to expect along the way.

1. Ensure Safety First

After a covered event like a fire, storm damage, or roof collapse, your first priority should always be safety. Make sure everyone in your household is safe and that there are no immediate hazards before taking any further steps.

2. Prevent Further Damage with Emergency Repairs

Once it’s safe, take immediate action to stop additional damage. This might include:

  • Shutting off water after a burst pipe

  • Covering a damaged roof

  • Boarding up broken windows

Keep all receipts and records of these emergency repairs as your insurance company may reimburse you.

3. Contact Your Insurance Agent

Before officially filing a claim, speak with your insurance agent. They can help you determine whether filing a claim makes financial sense.

In some cases, if repair costs are close to or below your deductible (plus potential premium increases), paying out of pocket may be the better option.

Be ready with:

  • Your policy number

  • Personal information

  • Details about the incident

4. Document All Damage Thoroughly

Accurate documentation is critical to a successful claim. Be sure to:

  • Take clear photos and videos of all damage

  • Create a detailed inventory of affected items

  • Save receipts for repairs, replacements, and temporary living expenses

Even if items are beyond repair, do not throw them away until your insurer has assessed them.

5. Insurance Assessment and Inspection

After your claim is filed, your insurance company will evaluate the damage. This may involve sending an adjuster to inspect your property and determine the extent of the loss.

6. Claim Payout and Reimbursement

Once the assessment is complete, your insurer will calculate your payout based on your policy coverage. This amount is intended to restore your home to its pre-loss condition, minus your deductible.

While these steps seem simple, they can feel much more difficult to navigate.  Keeping any paperwork that has been filed, as well as any documentation of damage or emergency repairs you had to make can make it easier to navigate everything.  Even if something is damaged beyond repair, don’t throw it away!  It’s still valuable when any documentation of damage is required.  Furthermore, it will help you to remember that only you and your insurance agent have your best interests at heart.  Do not assume things, and do not trust third parties to have your best interests at heart.
