Do Phoenix Speed Camera Tickets Affect Your Insurance

If you’ve noticed new cameras popping up around Phoenix, you’re not imagining things. In 2026, the City of Phoenix officially brought back its photo safety camera program, marking a major shift in how traffic laws are enforced across the Valley.

But what does this mean for you as a driver and could it impact your insurance?

Why Phoenix Brought Back Speed Cameras

According to the City of Phoenix, the return of photo safety cameras is part of a broader effort to reduce serious crashes and traffic fatalities. The program aligns with the city’s Vision Zero Road Safety Action Plan, which focuses on making streets safer for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Speeding has been a major concern locally. In fact, Arizona data shows speeding contributes to a significant portion of serious crashes, which is one of the main reasons officials decided to reintroduce automated enforcement.

Where Cameras Are Located

The program includes 17 total speed enforcement cameras placed across Phoenix.

  • 9 cameras are installed along high-risk corridors with a history of speed-related crashes

  • 8 additional cameras rotate through school zones to protect children and pedestrians

These locations aren’t permanent and many cameras will rotate every few months, meaning drivers can’t rely on memorizing where they are.

Warning Period and Tickets

When the program launched on February 23, 2026, Phoenix implemented a 30-day warning period. During that time, drivers caught speeding received warnings instead of fines.

Now that the grace period has ended, actual citations are being issued to drivers who exceed posted speed limits.

What About Red Light Cameras?

While speed cameras are currently active, red light cameras are not yet widely deployed again though city officials have indicated support for adding them in the future.

That means, for now, most camera-based enforcement in Phoenix is focused specifically on speeding but not red light violations.

Will a Camera Ticket Affect Your Insurance?

This is the big question for many Phoenix drivers.

In Arizona, most photo radar tickets are treated as civil violations, not criminal offenses. Whether they affect your insurance depends on several factors, including:

  • Whether the ticket is formally served

  • Whether it ends up on your driving record

  • Your insurance company’s underwriting rules

In many cases, speeding camera tickets may not impact your insurance the same way a traditional traffic stop would but that’s not guaranteed. If a violation is reported to your driving record, your insurer could still consider it when calculating your premium. But in most cases, it only serves as revenue for the city and is not factored into premium prices. Red light cameras, on the other hand, will almost certainly go on your record and can dramatically increase premiums.

The Bottom Line

Speed cameras are officially back in Phoenix, and they’re likely here to stay. While their primary goal is improving safety, they can still lead to tickets, and potentially affect your insurance depending on how the violation is handled.
