5 Effective Ways to Lower Your Water Bil

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the average person uses between 80 and 100 gallons of water per day. That adds up quickly: not just for the environment, but for your monthly expenses as well. By making a few simple changes around your home, you can significantly reduce water usage, lower your utility bills, and live more sustainably.

1. Check Your Appliances for Leaks

Even small leaks can waste a surprising amount of water over time. Regularly inspect toilets, showerheads, dishwashers, and washing machines for drips or hidden leaks. A slow-dripping faucet or running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons per month. Fixing these issues promptly is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to cut down on water waste.

2. Convert Your Toilet to Low Flow

Older toilets can use several gallons per flush. You can reduce this by placing a filled plastic gallon bottle (with sand and water) inside your toilet tank. This simple DIY method displaces water, meaning less is used with each flush. It’s an inexpensive way to improve efficiency without replacing your entire toilet.

3. Install Faucet Aerators

Adding aerators to your faucets is a quick upgrade that can make a big difference. Aerators mix air with water, reducing the overall flow while maintaining strong pressure. This means you’ll use less water for everyday tasks like washing hands or brushing teeth, without sacrificing performance.

4. Insulate Your Pipes

Insulating your water pipes helps maintain the temperature of hot water as it travels to your faucet. This reduces the time you spend waiting for water to heat up, meaning you won’t have to let it run as long. Less waiting equals less wasted water and lower utility costs over time.

5. Use Your Dishwasher Instead of Hand Washing

It may seem counterintuitive, but using a dishwasher is often more water-efficient than washing dishes by hand. Modern dishwashers typically use around 6 gallons per cycle, while a running faucet can use about 2 gallons per minute. Over time, switching to a dishwasher can significantly cut down your kitchen water usage.

Bonus Tip: Xeriscape Your Yard

Outdoor water use can account for a large portion of your total consumption, especially in dry climates. Xeriscaping involves landscaping with drought-resistant plants, rocks, and mulch to reduce the need for irrigation. This not only conserves water but also creates a low-maintenance, visually appealing yard.
