What to do if your Package is Stolen?

Over the last 5 years or so, the theft of packages off of peoples front porches has grown exponentially. Although we would all love to think that it would never happen to us, and that maybe it's just a fad. It is never too early to prepare yourself and stay informed on what to do if you are put into the position. Today's blog we will be going over: What to do if your package is stolen? And whether or not your insurance company can help you.

What to do if your Package is Stolen?

  1. Contact the Carrier- Sometimes a package may not have been stolen, maybe it was just a mix up with the carrier. Contacting the carrier will make sure that your package was delivered safely, and if it was stolen, they may be able to help you track it down. Or, they can help you in the claims process, were it to go that far.

  2. File a Police Report- Filing a police report gives you an opportunity to try and track down the thief. Even if they believe they cannot catch them, with a police report you now have an official document that details the theft, which can be very helpful when going through the claims process.

  3. Check with the Retailer- With the rise in package thefts, a lot of companies have been offering refunds, or even a replacement item with proof of theft. However, sometimes it can be hard to prove a theft has occurred, which is why filing a police report is so important. If you do not have video or some form of documentation that the theft happened that the retailer may not offer you the same benefits.

  4. Check with the Neighbors- Sometimes delivery companies mess up. It's impossible to always be perfect, so before you decide to do anything drastic, give your neighbors a call. Make sure that they didn't accidentally pick your package up, or had it delivered to their house instead on accident.

  5. Check your Credit Card- If a credit card was used to purchase the item, then your card issuer may have purchase protection that can reimburse you.

Does Insurance Cover Package Theft?

If your package is stolen, you are able to file a claim on your homeowners or renters policy. However, like every claim, we would only recommend filing a claim if the package is worth more than your deductible. Filing a claim must make sense financially, as it can raise your premiums when you file a claim. That is why it is so important to work with a broker like AZ Insurance Team, because we are not tied to any major insurance company. We will always be honest about your situation and will work day and night to find you a policy that fits you.
