Everyday life can get the best of you sometimes, and most of the time you could have never stopped what was coming. That is what happens with car break ins. It's a stressful and inconvenient feeling that no one ever wants to go through. Sadly, it happens more than any of us would like, so what do you do if your car is broken into? Read the rest of today's blog to find out!
Leave the Car Where It Is
This is now an active crime scene. Do not touch anything, make sure that everything remains where you left it. Although it can be tempting to go through your car in the time of panic that overwhelms you, but all you will be doing is hindering the the polices' ability to conduct an honest investigation.
Call the Police
Almost all of the time, the police will send out an officer to conduct a quick on scene report of the crime. In the off chance that they are so busy that they cannot send anyone, they will most likely have you fill out a report at the police station. If they do ask you to come in, do NOT drive the car involved in the theft. Ask a friend or take public transportation.
Take Photos
As with any accident or theft, take as many photos as you can. We are so lucky today to have an incredible camera in our pockets at all times. Take advantage of it. Take photos of anything that is broken, scratched, or dented. If you think something could help in the investigation, then it is probably best to take photos.
Make a List of Stolen Items
Although it may be hard to make a comprehensive list of everything that was taken out of your car. Try to make a list of everything that you can remember being in the car before the theft. The more detailed the list the better, as your insurance company is more likely to reimburse you.
Cancel Credit Cards
This is pretty self explanatory, and something you should do in the event of any type of theft. Having your car damaged and personal items stolen is bad enough, do not let them steal your money and identity too. Call your credit card companies and cancel them as soon as you can to protect you properly.
File an Insurance Claim
Whether or not to file an insurance claim is the hardest decision you have to make in this whole process, and it truly comes down to a few factors. If the car has damage that exceeds the price of your deductible, then it is probably best for you to file a claim. However, it is important to take into account that when you file a claim, the possibility that your rates will go up in the next term are exponentially higher. Your homeowners or renters insurance will cover all of your stolen items, but again it is a judgement call on whether you believe the items are worth the claim.
