Common Mistakes that People make when filing an Insurance Claim

Updated: Aug 4, 2020

Charlotte Burr, owner of AZ Insurance Team, talks about the common mistakes that people make when filing an insurance claim.

As an Insurance Broker of almost 9 years, she claims that the most common mistake she has seen in this circumstance is when "people listen to their emotions instead of their brain." Many times, people may notice something wrong with their house or car and make the impulsive decision to quickly file an insurance claim. However, dollar-wise, this may not be the best decision.

Essentially, even if you file a small claim, your insurance rates will significantly increase (between 20 and 40%). It is largely likely that your payout will be less than this amount, causing you to, ultimately... lose significant money.

She advises that the best thing you can do is to simply think rationally. Take a few minutes and make a few phone calls: this could save you hundreds of dollars over the years. Charlotte emphasizes getting as many estimates as you possibly can. Have your plumber (or whoever it may be) give you some quantitative values before you make the decision to call your insurance company.

Of course, if you are in a catastrophic situation, PLEASE call your Insurance Company as quickly as you can.

However, say the bratty kid down the street broke your window while playing baseball, you may want to consider the ultimate costs/benefits of calling your insurance company. As aforementioned, this phone call will lead to increased insurance rates as the years progress, ultimately causing you to lose money.
