Now that flu season is here, it’s time to start preparing ourselves and our homes from the spread of the contagious disease. If you or a family member has already been infected, here are a few steps you can take to prevent the spread of viral germs.
Consider getting a flu shot for everyone in your home. Health experts say that receiving a flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu. There are several options for a flu shot ranging from standard, intradermal, to a nasal spray vaccine.
Cover coughs and sneezes. Flu germs spread through your mouth and nose so wearing a mask around others will likely prevent the virus from spreading. At the very least, try to use a tissue to cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away immediately and wash your hands right after.
Clean your hands often. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend washing your hands with soapy water or alcohol based rub in order to prevent the flu.
Disinfect spots in your home with the most germs. Use disinfectant wipes or fluids to wipe down things like appliance handles, phones, light switches and door knob handles to remove germs from your house and keep them from spreading to other family members or guests.
Wash your fabrics. Once you or someone living in your house has ridden of the flu, clean all your bedding and sheets in hot water and dry your linens on high heat. Clean out your washer afterwards with a bit of bleach to kill the rest of the germs left behind.
You may be unable to prevent the flu entirely, but cleaning your home and taking preventative measures is a good start to keeping the virus from spreading.
