A vacation home can be a pleasant escape from a colder location or even your regular routine. Either way, keeping your vacation house secure is a concern for many homeowners; particularly because the risk of damage or break-in is higher when you are away for the majority of the year.
If you’re worried about theft and burglars, many cities allow you to register for police checks where an officer will periodically check your home while you are away.
However, police stations may place a 30 day limit which may only be helpful to you if you are away on vacation rather than moving 6 months out of the year. Another option is to hire a property manager who will also drive by frequently to check on the home’s maintenance. Installing a security system and cameras may also make you feel more at ease.
If you plan on renting out your second home, consider changeable locks that allow you to reprogram the key periodically such as a keypad. Having an owner’s closet that you keep valuable possessions in and keep in a locked room can also help prevent robberies.
Don’t let burglars know you’re away by letting mail pile up at the door. Ask a friend to pick your mail up or contact the post office and ask them to put a hold on any mail coming to that location. Also, have lamps by the front windows on a timer to give the illusion of human activity.
Lastly, in the case that you’re leaving your home for the winter, protect it from the cold weather while you are away. Prevent pipes from freezing by keeping the furnace on at a low temperature and disconnect your garden hose from the spigot.
Taking these precautions will help ensure your home stays safe during your absence and is ready for your return later next season.
