10 Unexpected Things Insurance Covers

Updated: Aug 4, 2020

crazy things insurance covers

Strange things covered by Homeowners Insurance:

Riots & Terrorist Attacks Looking out your window at a riot or an unfolding terrorist attack would be terrifying. If rioters loot your garage-you’re covered. Damage caused by explosions and fires from terrorists is also covered. However, if a state of war has been declared, you’re likely out of luck.

Meteorites & Space Debris Space rocks falling from the sky and hitting you or your house seems unlikely, but it does happen. More common is falling objects from airplanes flying overhead, which is also covered. Having personally witnessed an airplane catch fire and crash into a house, I know for a fact this stuff does happen.

Gravestones If you’re the primary caretaker of a gravestone, whether or not it’s on your property, many policies consider it personal property. In the instance that your family member’s headstone is vandalized, it’s likely covered.

Accidents Away From Home Sometimes random accidents happen when you’re away from home that don’t involve any vehicles, in most cases these are covered by your homeowner’s policy. For instance, if you’re on vacation and break someone’s nose during a game of beach volleyball, you’ll want to file a liability claim under your homeowners policy.

Stampeding Cows That’s right, stampeding cows! This may not be commonplace where you live, but in rural areas a herd of spooked cows could do a lot of damage to your property when they come barreling through. If your neighbor owns the cows, it’s more likely that their insurance company will pay for the damage.

Dorm Room Burglary If you have a child that lives on campus, is a full-time student, and under age 26 their stuff is covered. If someone breaks in and steals their brand new Apple computer, you can file a claim with your homeowners policy. If your child is living off campus however, they’ll likely need to get a renter’s policy.

Shocking things covered by Auto Insurance:

Pet Injuries If you get in a car accident, your injuries may not be the only thing covered, but normally your dog or cat too. If the accident wasn’t your fault, it’s likely your policy will cover your veterinarian bills. Even without pet coverage on your policy, it’s likely the other driver’s insurance will cover injuries to your pets through property damage liability coverage.

Pothole Damage Most auto insurers consider hitting a pothole a collision. So next time you find yourself smashing up your car after hitting what seems like a crater in the ground, contact your agent before filing the claim.

Rodent Damage Yes, rodent damage. It may seem unusual, but if you leave your car sitting for weeks or months at a time, mice, squirrels, and even rabbits may take up home in your vehicle. Trust us, from the stories we’ve heard it gets pretty messy and they can tear things up quite a bit.

Car Seats If you get in an accident, it’s a must to replace your child’s car seat even if it doesn’t appear to be damaged. Your car insurance may cover the cost.

It’s important to know what is covered by your auto and homeowners insurance. Every policy is different, so definitely check with your agent to see if the things on this list are covered by your own policy before trying to file a claim.

If you have any questions or would like to know what other strange things may be covered by your policy, contact your agent.
